Here are brief
bios of some of the women who have been involved in some way, whether
through work or relationships, in the crazy world of Rock 'n'
Roll. The women listed are not all known for
being groupies or having links with rock stars but have talents in
something and have achieved success in their own way - whether they
be authors, singers, photogrphers, actresses, etc. If
you have
any ideas about anyone I may have missed, who deserves to be listed
on here,
please don't hesitate to e-mail me their details: backstagebabes@popstar.com
Pamela Anderson
Who hasn't heard
of Pam?! As one of "Playboy" magazine's most successful
cover stars and an actress and favourite pin-up girl, Pamela is known
all over the world. Having had relationships with Brett Michaels of
Poison, Kid Rock and, famously, Tommy Lee, she's more recently been
involved with actor, Steven Dorff, and Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray.
Pamela
Des Barres
American mother of
all groupies and author of I'm With the Band, A Groupie Grows Up
(her autobiography) and Rock Bottom (see Book Reviews). Pamela
had flings with Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Gene Simmons,
Marc Bolan, Iggy Pop, Keith Moon, Bob Dylan and many others during
the 1970s. She was a musician herself, being in all-girl band the
G.T.Os in the 1970s but has since been a successful writer.
Patti
Boyd
George Harrison
fell in love with blonde beauty Patti when she starred as a
schoolgirl fan in The Beatles film A Hard Days Night and they
married. They divorced and Patti went onto marry George's friend Eric
Clapton. He wrote the classic songs Wonderful Tonight and Layla
about her but his never-ending alcohol and drugs problems eventually
brought their marriage to a standstill and they went their separate
ways. After years of bad luck and tragedy when his only son died in
1990, Eric has since found happiness and has had two more children
with his American wife Melissa, but Patti remains the sole
inspiration for some of his best loved songs.
Bebe
Buell
Bebe was a
successful model in the 1970s and Playboy Bunny. She's had high
profile relationships with Rod Stewart, Elvis Costello, Mick Jagger,
Jimmy Page and Iggy Pop but it was her affair with Aerosmith singer
Steve Tyler that she's most known for - the couple have a daughter,
actress Liv Tyler. Bebe has written several magazine articles about
her Rock 'n' Roll lifestyle but her autobiography, Rebel Heart: An
American Rock 'n' Roll Journey only came out in 2001.
Amanda
De Cadenet
Known as a teenage
'wild child' in the 1980s when she was regularly seen around at
London night-clubs and socialising with several famous figures from
the world of pop and rock. Amanda has been a TV presenter, actress
and model. Daughter of racing driver Alain De Cadenet, she comes from
a wealthy background and left a private girls school in Kent with
several academic qualifications, so she's no dumb blonde! After
dating Nathan Moore of 80s boy band Brother Beyond, Amanda went onto
marry John Taylor of Duran Duran and they have a daughter, Atlanta,
who was born in 1992 when Amanda was just 20. They divorced and since
she has been linked to Keanu Reeves and Nick Valesi from The Strokes.
She's now a photographer in LA.
Cynthia
Plaster Caster (Cynthia Albritton)
A Chicago based
artist who is famous for her erotic sculptures of rock stars' private
parts. Cynthia has been featured on documentaries and several news
articles and still works from her Chicago studio. She admits that
Jimi Hendrix had the biggest dick she's ever plaster casted - it's
one of her most famous works of art!
Carmen
Electra (Tara Patrick)
Carmen Electra
made an album with Prince, which was a flop, but she lived with the
star for a while before pursuing her career as an actress. She's
posed for Playboy and been a successful lingerie and swimwear model,
before starring in Baywatch and being an MTV presenter. Famous for
dating Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray, Kid Rock and Fred Durst, Carmen's
now engaged to Dave Navarro and formed an all-girl band.
Marianne
Faithful
Most known for her
high profile relationship with Mick Jagger, Marianne also admitted to
having slept with all the Rolling Stones and even had bisexual
encounters with Anita Pallenberg. She had a successful singing career
in the 1960s and is one of rock's true survivors. After her break-up
with Mick and a miscarriage, she suffered from serious heroin
addiction and attempted suicide but she fought away her demons and
made a musical comeback in the 80s with a new album, Broken English.
Now a grandmother and living in Ireland, she continues to make music
and perform live. She even played at the Glastonbury festival in
1999. Her autobiography, Faithful: The Autobiography of Marianne Faithful,
is one of the best rock biographies.
Rachel
Hunter
The New Zealand
born model met Rod Stewart when she was only 21 and he 45! They
married and had two children, Renee and Liam, but separated in 1999.
Rachel has modelled for many top designers and done beauty features
for Maybelline and Covergirl. Since her split with Rod, she's enjoyed
flings with several rockers more her own age and it was reported that
she was seen out with Mark McGrath but it's her outings with British
pop idol Robbie Williams that the media seem to be interested in recently.
Patsy
Kensit
Patsy is an
actress who has starred in several movies but seems to be more famous
for her three marriages to men in bands. She was 19 when she maried
her first husband, Dan Donovan, from 80s pop band Big Audio Dynamite
and then met Jim Kerr from Simple Minds in a hotel. The couple fell
in love, married and had a son, James, but sadly, because of the
large amount of time apart due to Jim's touring schedules, they
divorced. She fronted pop band, Eighth Wonder, who had a few
Top 10 hits in the late 80s but the worst mistake she made was
marrying Liam Gallagher from Oasis. He was five years younger than
her and it was discovered that he cheated Patsy only a week after
they were married - when he fathered daughter, Molly, with London
based singer Lisa Moorish. The couple sensibly divorced even though
they have a son, Lennon. Patsy now has custody of both her sons and,
luckily, is friends with all her ex-husbands. After struggling with
drug abuse and depression, she's recovered and got back into acting.
Heather
Locklear
The ultimate
all-American girl and star of 1980s superstar soap opera Dynasty,
Heather has also been in several movies and married notorious Motley
Crue hellraiser Tommy Lee. It wasn't a surprise that the marriage
didn't last; there were reports that they often rowed and he beat her
up but she's since married Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora and they have a
daughter called Ava.
Courtney
Love (Courtney Love Harrison)
The ultimate wild
rock chick, as well as being married to Kurt Cobain, Courtney's had
relationships with Bill Corgan, Trent Reznor, Twiggy Ramirez
(formerly of Marilyn Manson), Evan Dando and actor Ed Norton. Wildly
outspoken and notorious for her past drug use and outrageous
behaviour on and off stage, Courtney has alwyas been a tough
character and has managed to have a succesful career as an actress as
well as a rock singer in the band - Hole. She proudly remodelled
herself from having been a messed-up grunge riot girl to a glamorous
Hollywood movie star and devoted mother to her daughter, Frances. (See
Book Reviews).
Linda
McCartney (Linda Eastman)
When Linda married
Paul in 1969, nobody expected the marriage to last and thousands of
Beatles fans were left heartbroken. Linda was an American and already
divorced with a daughter but the McCartneys had one of the most
successful and loving showbiz marriages ever. When referring to other
women's sly comments, she once joked to Bebe Buelle "Oh, they're
just jealous! I've slept with all of the Rolling Stones!". Linda
was a talented photographer but made a personal fortune by launching
her own range of vegetarian foods. Sadly, she died from breast cancer
in 1998 having been married to Paul for 29 years. He has since found
happiness with model Heather Mills and the couple married in June 2002.
Kate
Moss
One of the most
successful British fashion models of the last 25 years, cover girl
Kate has dated Johnny Depp, Anthony Langdon from Spacehog, Evan
Dando, producer Nelle Hooper and had a fling with Twiggy Ramirez.
She's sung with Bobby Gillespie on two Primal Scream tracks and
starred in the band's video for Kowalski with Sophie Dahl.
Kate has always had links to the music biz and has often been seen at
various rock events. She was once seen amongst the crowd at a Strokes
gig in Oxford and backstage at The White Stripes, Oasis and Marilyn
Manson concerts. In 2005, Kate got bad press for being photographed
using cocaine in a recording studio with her then boyfriend,
Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty. She hid away in Los Angles to try
and avoid being questioned by London police about drug posession but
has since returned and been let off with a cution. It has not ruined
her modelling career at all, despite reports that it would lose her contracts.
Meg
Matthews
Oasis were signed
to Alan McGee's label, Creation, and Meg worked there as an artist
liaison before she became songwriter Noel Gallagher's girlfriend. She
was well-known on the London rock scene before they married and ran
PR company 2Active with her friend, Fran Cutler. They organised
parties and VIP events for film premieres and concerts. Meg was the
inspiration for Wonderwall, which is one of Oasis's most
popular songs. She and Noel married in Las Vegas and have a daughter,
Anais, but they divorced in 2002.
Nico
(Christa Paffgen)
Nico was the 6ft
tall German model who sometimes sang backing vocals with Lou Reed and
the Velvet Underground. She socialised with artists, actresses, drag
queens and rock stars on the New York social scene in the 1960s and
became part of Andy Warhol's Factory. Nico had affairs with Lou Reed,
Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Mimi Hendrix and Iggy Pop. She battled a
heroin addiction and tried to revive her music career in England in
the early 1980s without much success. She died suddenly from a brain
haemorrhage in 1988 while out riding her motorcycle near her home on
the Spanish island of Ibiza.
Sharon
Osbourne (Sharon Arden)
Ozzy's second wife
and mother of his three youngest children (Aimee, Kelly and Jack),
Sharon brought Ozzy back from the edge of alcoholism and even forgave
him for trying to strangle her while he was drunk during a domestic
incident in 1989. She's Ozzy's manager and has also managed The
Smashing Pumpkins but she quit saying that Billy Corgan 'made her
sick'! It was Sharon's idea to do the hilarious fly on the wall style
docu-soap The Osbournes, which has been the most successful
show on MTV.
Sharon is better
known in the UK as one of the judges on the TV talent show "The
X Factor".
Scarlet
Page www.scarletpage.com
There aren't many
female rock photographers around but Scarlet's definitely one of the
best. She's a regular star snapper for the UK's top weekly rock
magazine Kerrang! and took all the photos for Robbie
Williams's book Nodoby Someday. Her father may be Jimmy Page
of Led Zeppelin, but I was three years below Scarlet at the same
school and still remember her artistic talent. Her photos are
excellent and, because of her impressive talent, it's clear to see
that she would be successful anyway - whether related to a guitar
legend or not!
Winona
Ryder (Winona Horowitz)
Winona has been
acting since she was 14 and has starred in more than 20 movies. After
her famous engagement to Johnny Depp, she dated Dave Pirner from Soul
Asylum, Tre from Green Day, Evan Dando and Dave Grohl. She has always
been a regular face on the West Hollywood live music scene. She was
arrested for shoplifting in 2002 and there have been reports of drug
taking and depression in the past, especially when she mysteriously
pulled out of her role in The Godfather Part 3 before shooting.
Penny
Smith
An almost
legendary British rock photographer, Penny is famous for her work
with some of the biggest bands around during the punk era, especially
The Clash, and has photographed for New Musical
Express,
Q and many more music publications. For her outstanding
contribution to rock 'n' roll, she won the Godlike Genious award,
joint with music journalist Nick Kent, at the 2002 NME Awards.
Lisa
Snowden
Lisa is the
glamorous presenter of the UK's longest running music show Top of
the Pops and regularly presents programmes on MTV, including news
and gossip show Daily Edition. During her days as a model in
the early 1990s, she dated sexy David Loeffler from American rap trio
EYC. The media have been more interested in Lisa's love life rather
than her career. She's been linked with some gorgeous men and became
romatically involved with George Clooney after they both met on the
set of a coffee commercial in Spain. More recently, she had a
relationship with Incubus singer Brandon Boyd and accompanied him on tours.
Dita
Von Teese www.dita.net
Famous
for being Marilyn Manson's wife, Dita Von Teese has made a name for
herself as a glamour model and successful burlesque performance
artist. In 2002, she performed one of her strip shows in an oversized
cocktail glass at the luxury Argyle Hotel on Sunset Boulevard! Dita
has a very popular fan club, members pay an annual membership fee,
but have access to her private e mail address, special gifts and
various exclusive news on shows and appearances. She has been
photographed in fancy dress, fetish costume and lingerie for glossy
magazine covers all over the world and models her look on movie stars
from the 1930s and 40s.
Vanessa
Warwick www.vanessawarwick.com
Vanessa was the
wild haired host of MTV's longest running rock show The
Headbangers Ball and a well-known face on the rock scene. She's
still working in the music industry and is a mother of two but that
doesn't stop her partying as she's seen around a lot (mainly in the
VIP areas) at rock concerts and festivals.
Morgana
Welch
Has appeared in
photos of her with other groupies and rock stars at the Riot House
and the Whiskey A Go Go. Her autobiography can be found at Hollywood Diaries
www.hollywooddiaries.com and
has recently been mentioned on a number of classic rock mailing lists.
Paula
Yates
Gone - but not
gorgotten. Most people remember Paula as being married to Bob Geldof
and leaving him for INXS singer, Michael Hutchence, but she was a
highly intelligent woman and wrote 14 books and regularly worked as a
newspaper and magazine columnist. She presented cult 1980s music show The
Tube with musician Jools Holland and was a devoted mother to her
four children, three daughters with Bob and the youngest with
Michael. All have unusual names - Fifi, Peaches, Pixie and Tiger
Lilie. Sadly, her personal life became debauched and out of control
during her relationsahip with Michael and, after his sudden death in
1997, she fought depression and drug abuse. She was found dead from
an overdose in September 2000.
